He attended St. Florian School for several years. In 1905, his family moved to Florence, Alabama where he attended State Normal College, riding in a horse and buggy each day to college. After graduating, with a degree in business administration, he taught at Kilburn School. Robert then worked as a bookkeeper at Florence Coal and Ice Co. In 1915 his family moved back to St. Florian, where they built a big two-story home with a fireplace in every room. They had a 1,400 acre farm where they raised corn, hay, irish and sweet potatoes, and raised animals like turkeys, cattle, pigs, chickens, horses and mules. They had an orchard and made their own cider and vinegar. He was drafted in 1918 and called to duty in France. He was on the front line in the trenches when he got appendicitis and had to go the the hospital for an operation which probably kept him from being killed on the front line of battle. He was discharged on March 7, 1919 at the age of 26. A few months later he got married to Carrie Rasch. They first lived in a rented farmhouse, then they moved in to live in his parents' huse until their house was built, across the road from his parents. Robert died suddenly at the Florence Elks Club where he had gone for lunch.
